Do I need a Team Created? or will Chat do?

Before you request to have a Team created in MS Teams, please consider the following:

Do I need a Team?

If you only need a space to have a few meetings, and it isn’t a long-term group, you likely don’t need a Team, and the Teams Chat function likely has what you need. Check out the Teams Chat and quick meetings 

If you have team projects and are working for a period of a few months of more with the same group, I would suggest requesting a team and go to the Requesting and Setting up a Team page for more details.

Chat Feature Uses

  • occasional interaction with a single person or a group
  • chat through text, and Audio and Video calls/meetings
  • Scheduled or impromptu meetings
  • recording feature
  • limited file sharing
  • internal organization communication and interaction only
  • short term duration of topics and needs

Teams Feature Use

  • regular interaction with a group for specific purposes (research projects, class work, group work, office work)
  • chat through text, and Audio and Video calls/meetings
  • recording feature
  • scheduled or impromptu meetings
  • ongoing file sharing
  • internal organization and external communication and interaction 
  • longer duration of topics and needs 
  • A One-Stop approach for collaborative working
